ART & DESIGN IN EYFS

Expressive Arts and Design - Creating with Materials

Art in the EYFS at Kingsacre is a joyful and integral part of learning through play and exploration. It is woven throughout our curriculum, allowing children to express themselves creatively while developing fine motor skills and imagination.

Our children are given opportunities to experiment with painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, and printing. They learn that art can be used to share ideas, tell stories, and express feelings. Children are supported to talk about their creations, make choices, and explain their ideas, fostering confidence and independence as young artists.

The learning environment is rich with accessible art resources that invite children to explore and create freely. Natural and recycled materials, along with tools and techniques, are provided to stimulate curiosity and imagination. Art is also connected to stories, nature, and real-life experiences, helping children make meaningful links between their artwork and the world around them.

At Kingsacre, we celebrate every child’s creativity and individuality. Children are encouraged to appreciate their own and others’ work, developing respect for different artistic styles and cultural influences. Through art, they learn to observe carefully, persevere with ideas, and take pride in their creations - building the foundations for a lifelong love of artistic expression.

Children will achieve the following Early Learning Goals:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Encourages self-expression and confidence in creativity.
  • Communication and Language: Develops vocabulary to describe ideas and artwork.
  • Mathematics: Supports understanding of shape, pattern, and measurement.
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World: Explores materials, textures, and cultural influences.
  • Physical Development: Enhances fine motor skills through drawing, cutting, and manipulation of tools.
  • Creative Development: Promotes imaginative representation and artistic experimentation.
