GEOGRAPHY IN EYFS

People, Culture and Communities - The Natural World

Geography in the EYFS is explored through ‘Understanding the World’, which encourages children to notice and appreciate the world around them. At Kingsacre, children begin to develop geographical awareness through topic-based learning that connects them to their environment, both local and global. They are supported to observe, compare, and discuss different places, climates, and landscapes through stories, photos, maps, and real-life experiences.

Our children are encouraged to talk about features of their immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another. They begin to understand how people interact with their surroundings and how places can change over time. By exploring their school grounds, local community, and beyond, children develop a sense of place and belonging within the wider world.

The classroom environment is enriched with maps, globes, natural materials, and small-world play that reflects a variety of settings. These resources invite children to explore and make connections, deepening their understanding of the world. Through imaginative and outdoor play, children develop vocabulary linked to the natural and human-made environment.

At Kingsacre, children are inspired to ask questions about the world and to express their ideas about what they see. Teachers encourage discussion around seasonal changes, weather, and habitats, helping children to notice patterns and relationships in the natural world. Through meaningful exploration, they develop curiosity, respect, and responsibility for their environment.

Children will achieve the following Early Learning Goals:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Builds respect and appreciation for differences in people and places, supporting empathy and understanding.

  • Communication and Language: Encourages questioning, discussion, and the use of new vocabulary linked to environments and locations.

  • Mathematics: Develops awareness of spatial language, direction, and distance when exploring maps and spaces.

  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World: Encourages observation and comparison of environments, habitats, and geographical features.

  • Physical Development: Promotes exploration and coordination through outdoor learning and fieldwork.

  • Creative Development: Inspires representation of landscapes through drawing, modelling, and imaginative play.
