MFL at Kingsacre
The intention of the MFL curriculum at Kingsacre is that children are taught to develop an interest in foreign languages in an engaging, stimulating way. We also teach children to celebrate cultural diversity and to become a multi-cultural member of society, where they will be able to foster their curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Our aim is for children to leave KS2 as someone who can readily express some ideas and feelings in French and to be able to respond and understand both verbal and written communication.
A linguist from Kingsacre will:
- Enjoy learning about the culture in France and be able to compare it to everyday life for them.
- Accurately be able to identify the phonic sounds.
- Write simple phrases, joining these together into sentences to express ideas.
- Read and understand a simple text.
- Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions.
- Speak in sentences using familiar French vocabulary.
- Understand basic grammar and the differences between masculine and feminine words and how to apply these in sentences.
MFL IN EYFS
Communication and Language - Understanding and Speaking
At Kingsacre, children are introduced to Modern Foreign Languages through fun, engaging, and interactive experiences. In EYFS, language learning focuses on developing curiosity about other languages and cultures. Through songs, rhymes, games, and stories, children begin to hear and repeat simple words and phrases in another language.
Our children enjoy exploring how words can sound different and are encouraged to make links between their own language and others. They develop early awareness that people around the world communicate in many ways, promoting respect and curiosity about cultural diversity.
The learning environment is enriched with visual prompts, greetings in other languages, and multicultural resources that celebrate diversity. Teachers model enthusiasm for language learning, creating a safe and joyful atmosphere where children feel confident to ‘have a go’.
At Kingsacre, children begin their journey as global citizens by valuing communication and cultural understanding. They develop listening skills, confidence in speaking, and a growing appreciation of the rich variety of languages in our world.
