Science at Kingsacre
At Kingsacre Primary School it is our intention to provide a Science curriculum that ignites children’s inquisitive nature and fosters their curiosity for learning about themselves, the amazing world around them and how it behaves. Curiosity is an essential ingredient in wanting to learn, and Science at Kingsacre inspires children to confidently ask thought-provoking questions and discover answers through thoughtful observation and exciting practical investigation. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Throughout the programmes of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group. The curriculum is designed to ensure that children are able to acquire key scientific knowledge through practical experiences; using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently.
A Scientist at Kingsacre Primary School will:
- Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
- Develop an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of Science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them;
- Be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.
- Develop the essential scientific enquiry skills to deepen their scientific knowledge
- Develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment for their learning in Science and make links across the wider curriculum.
- Talk about Science in the ‘real world’ and how it relates to future careers.
SCIENCE IN EYFS
Understanding the World - the Natural World
Science in the EYFS at Kingsacre is all about curiosity, exploration, and discovery. Children learn through first-hand experiences, observations, and questions about the world around them. Our approach provides opportunities to explore living things, materials, and natural phenomena.
Children are encouraged to notice changes, make predictions, and talk about what they see. They learn to use their senses to explore textures, sounds, smells, and colours, developing early scientific thinking through play and investigation.
The learning environment is filled with natural materials, magnifying tools, and opportunities for outdoor discovery. Seasonal walks, gardening, and experiments spark excitement and wonder, helping children make connections between what they see and how the world works.
At Kingsacre, we nurture children’s sense of awe and curiosity about nature and science. They are supported to ask questions, share ideas, and reflect on their findings, developing confidence as young scientists with a lifelong love of exploration and discovery.
Children will achieve the following Early Learning Goals:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Encourages curiosity and perseverance in investigations.
- Communication and Language: Develops descriptive and explanatory language.
- Mathematics: Supports measurement, counting, and data collection.
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World: Develops understanding of natural phenomena, living things, and materials.
- Physical Development: Enhances fine and gross motor skills through practical exploration.
- Creative Development: Encourages representation of observations through drawing, modelling, and imaginative play.
